[Festivals]Jinju Lantern Festival

Jinju lantern festival 2008

Tradition of floating lanterns on Namgang River goes all the way back to 1592
in the worst suffering period of Imjin war(1592-1598) between Korean and Japanese.
Leading only 3,800 troops, Korean general Kim Si-Min killed 20,000 Japanese troops
who invaded Jinju fortress, heightening national pride.
General Kim used lanterns as military signals,
and after the war, people of Jinju continued to float lanterns on the river
to remember those who fought to defend their city.
